''When the insurgency that would become the Red River Resistance developed unexpectedly in the autumn of 1869, it was covered extensively by the newspapers of eastern Canada. The Toronto Globe for instance, printed at least one story about Red River every day between November 1869 and March 1870. Much of what appeared in these newspapers, and in newspapers in Britain and the United States, merged fact with wishful thinking, and much of it was hostile to the aspirations of the leaders of the local insurgents. Eastern Canadian readers often learned about the events of the resistance in news stories from American sources far from Red River, or from highly partisan letters from private correspondents within the settlement.''
